    TLII, Chapter 8, Day 3, Q36

Using valid syllogisms from Q25 (day 2) reduce to conditional syllogisms.

    Original syllogism
Either Frodo destroys the Ring or evil will triumph
Frodo does not destroy the Ring
    Therefore, evil will triumph.

    reduces to (from answer book)
If evil does not triumph, then Frodo destroys the Ring
Frodo does not destroy the Ring
    Therefore, evil will not triumph

    Shouldn't the conclusion be
    Therefore, evil will triumph
as we are told in the rules for reducing that the minor premise and conclusion must be unchanged.

Sorry if this has already been changed. My answer book is copyrighted 2000.

    The reduced syllogism should be:
If evil does not triumph then Frodo destroys the Ring
Frodo does not destroy the Ring
    Therefore, evil will triumph
So, the student is correct in how they reduced the disjunctive syllogism to a conditional syllogism, but this exercise in the book (Q25, Chapter 8) is not asking them to reduce. It has been updated in the 2008 copy of the answer key.
