    Default Biology?

I seem to remember something about Biology DVD's or streaming videos...but I can not find the thread is that something that is coming out soon?

Either way are there by chance lesson plans or tests etc for the Holt Modern Biology...I can only find the book.

    Thanks

We have worked on biology all summer, and I feel like we will have the dvds ready and released sometime this fall. We will have lesson plans with them, and maybe tests too. This course has been a bear to develop, but we are getting closer!

Thanks Tanya that will work fine for ds. I can believe it was a big project for you!

Goodness MP has come so far from when my oldest was a kindy and our friends first showed us their new Latin book...we have been using your wonderful materials for almost a dozen years now ...many thanks to Dr. Shelburne and you all for devoting not only your school years but summers as well to our students.

Still working! Fall is definitely still possible (today is only the first day, after all!), and we'd say December at the latest.

    So it is!
It has felt like fall for two weeks though

Sounds good. We are not in a huge hurry as we doing some intensive remediation this fall in other areas so it can wait.
Michael do you know..dvd and lesson plans are being made to go with the text...will there be/are there suggestions to do/buy lab components as well?
If not I will just pick up a set of biology labs to do separately.

Thanks as always for the hard work!

Great news! We will probably use it next year for 9th grade, after Novare Physical Science this year. Is that what you would recommend?

    Thanks!

Yes, we recommend Novare Physical Science for 8th. Biology can then be done in high school.

At HLS Indianapolis, we allow students to take biology in 9th grade if they meet the following criteria:
    1) earned an A in algebra in 8th grade
    2) earned an A in physical science in 8th grade
    3) demonstrate a desire to tackle advanced science courses

If they do not meet these criteria, we recommend they take Novare Introductory Physics in 9th grade, which gives them an additional year to build study skills and prepare for the increased workload of high school. Biology has a great deal of content and requires solid analytical thinking skills. Some students need an extra year to prepare.

Also consider your student's math ability. It is best if the student has completed algebra2 before chemistry, so if your student is not on track to do that, you might want to insert Intro Physics before biology.

    Hi Cindy,

Thanks for the response. I think he will earn an A in Physical Science this year, but he won't be finished with Algebra. He's 2/3 of the way through COTR PreAlgebra now, so he will start Algebra mid year this year. I have looked at Novare Intro to Physics, but I thought I saw on the MPOA course description that the student should have completed Algebra I before taking that one.

I'm sure you've posted this many times before, but the best sequence for a student who is not an advanced math student would be Intro to Physics--Holt Biology--Novare Chemistry?

    Thanks again!

Introductory Physics allows concurrent enrollment with algebra1. I have a number of 9th grade students taking algebra1 and Intro Physics at the same time - it was designed for that. MPOA recommends completion of algebra1 as a prerequisite. That is their experience; I checked with Mr. Piland.

Here is my recommended high school math and science sequence for grade-level math students:
    9th algebra1; Intro Physics
    10th algebra2; Biology
    11th geometry; Chemistry
12th pre-calculus; Anatomy and Physiology or *Advanced (trig-based) Physics
*strongly recommended for future medical students or engineering/ STEM majors

Here is my recommended high school math and science sequence for accelerated math students:
    9th algebra2; biology
    10th geometry; chemistry
    11th pre-calculus; advanced physics
12th calculus; dual credit chem, bio, physics OR anatomy and physiology

I haven't seen an answer to the question about the availability of lesson plans. I am adding the question, will there be tests created as well or are there tests in the book? I have found the geometry plans to be incredibly helpful. I would have made it much harder and longer without the guidance on what needed to be covered.

I am so sorry for not answering! Somehow I missed these questions!

I am emailing the person who's been working on this program right now in order to get answers to all three of these questions: lesson plans, labs, and tests. As soon as I hear back, I'll post.

Cindy, thank you for the clarification. I did double check the MPOA site, and it does list Algebra I as a prerequisite for Introductory Physics. Perhaps it's something unique to that class. But anyway, I think your grade level sequence will probably be the best science course for my son.

    Thanks again,

    Hello,

Just to update everyone, we will be writing both lesson plans and quizzes & tests. We also hope to have some options for an online lab component. Not all of these pieces will be ready immediately, but all will be available eventually.

    HTH!

    Catherine,
I checked with Mr. Piland and learned that MPOA recommends algebra1 as a prerequisite, based on their experience. Novare allows concurrent algebra enrollment (that's how intro physics was designed.) So the MPOA recommendation stands as written. I edited my reply above.
