Glad you had some success today!
A whiteboard would be helpful because those chalkboard activities are the interactive part of the lesson where he can watch/hear as you work through one or two then he can talk/work through some while you are watching to give feedback. By doing these together...

Good morning,
I would definitely look at the Rod & Staff Teacher Guide and note how they incorporate oral recitation of the facts, skip counting, and daily written practice. All of these work together to make recall of the facts more automatic. Some students do transition from using...

If she has a font that she writes with neatly and easily, using good pencil grip, continue with that. The specific font is not the most important component. In fact, most students who learn with New American Cursive will adapt the font a bit at some point. Adding those curls etc to make a more unique...

Second grade enrichment would be fine for both children. Many families include older children with their primary enrichment time because more children add to the discussions. Everyone can benefit from the vocabulary building and exposure to the art and music. No worry in combining for enrichment....

There are also phonics lessons in the teacher guides for each literature book. These are oral lessons to be covered quickly prior to reading to introduce or practice advanced phonograms the student will encounter when reading the section. There are also phonics lessons for after the section is read...

The ALS readers are an excellent source for reading through the summer, of course introducing phonograms as needed for success. However, if your student is progressing well with speed and fluency you can also move from Soft and White to real literature. Someone mentioned 100 Days of Summer Reading which...

Consider spending the summer practicing reading. It is so much easier to maintain only oral reading when the birds are singing, the sun is shining, and there is so much to do outside! That way FSR Book E and TS I can work together at the beginning of 1st grade. You could always start your official school...

I feel like between the article and the video linked in the response above you have a good picture of why we begin cursive in first grade and the importance teaching cursive. However, should you have additional questions, please post them. We want you to be comfortable teaching cursive!

Another option would be to use the MP K curriculum but spread it out over two years. This way your child will gain the writing stamina he will need to be successful in the first grade program. All the phonics instruction will be covered in FSR so there won't be any gaps in phonetic instruction and...
