Sadly, children are pushed into that because doing anything other than going to college is just weird in our society. We don't celebrate the kids who takes an apprenticeship with the local electrician or who decides to become a truck driver or a plumber.
    This is true, Mary...

First and foremost, she wants to get married and have children (she doesn't want to be a nun, despite the glamorous picture I've painted). She loves dogs and horses and does really well working with both. And she likes to sew and knit and crochet...I've been talking with her, as we sit together at our machines or over our needles, about turning one of these hobbies into a vocation. Dog trainers don't need college degrees and neither do horse trainers or trail guides. There is a really lovely store nearby that offers seamstress and dressmaker certifications - I've taken a few classes there and have really learned a lot! These are things that allow flexibility, can provide a good income and don't require college degrees.

For girls, depending on how adventurous they are, trail guides, expedition leaders, EMTs (regular or wilderness), range safety officers, marksmanship/firearm instructors (women are a HUGE market right now!), wedding gown/prom dress alterations specialists, pattern makers (needlework or sewing), small business owners (bakery, quilt shop, bookstore), cake decorators (esp. if you specialize in weddings!), tutors, dog trainers...none of these careers require a college degree, but could be fulfilling options.
My 10 year old daughter plans to :

Have six children ..... at home, because hospitals scare her
Work with horses in some capacity
Live near her mother, so that I can homeschool her children
      Decorate cakes

I'm going to ask a really stupid question, Mary. As a nurse for over 20 years, and a large portion of that in the ER, I've never heard of a wilderness EMT. Do tell.

Not stupid! A WEMT is an EMT who is also trained/certified to stabilize, treat & protect patients in remote environments until air or land support arrives. Think stranded hikers/climbers, hunters, disaster/war zones, people *coughcoughLikeMe!coughcough* who work on remote shooting ranges...
