    On second thought, yes, I agree! And actually it turns out that DD doesn't know her 9 and 10 fact families down cold, so we are going to back up and use the boats and stuff, which seems a bit easier to implement and it will help me get into the groove of R&S.

    I'm afraid if you teach the lesson the night before, you will soon burn out! That is a lot of teaching. Rod & Staff is set up so you can basically "read" the lesson. It is scripted! There is no shame in having the teacher book open and reading the sections. You will see that the lessons are repetitious in nature, so as you get further into the year and are more comfortable with the lesson lay-out , you will be able to read less but still use the information as a guide. I am confident that in no time you will be a ease with the material. But, should you need us for anything we are here!

    That does help thanks! I've printed off and laminated the files kindly shared earlier in this thread and may pretend teach the lesson tonight before I real teach it! We are new to R&S and I want DD to be impressed

    At first I thought this was a convoluted and confusing teaching aid. I couldn't figure out the bigger purpose. After using the chart as described in the teacher text, Michelle T's above reponse is spot on. Buy the poster set if you're not crafty or don't have time to make it. It was a very useful chart to teach the upper facts.

    Basically you are teaching the fact families as triplets. Rather than just teaching 7+5=12, you are teaching 7,5,12 .     This is the clover patch. It's two folders glued together to make a three page spread. The far right folder has its 'back' trimmed so that the back tab is removed. The "fold" of the right folder is lined up with the right side of the left folder. By cutting that tab off, it folds up to the size of a normal file folder. This part that folds in has a ziploc bag taped in it to keep the pieces and parts. Don't tape it down really tight, or you you won't be able to reach inside the bag to get the clovers out. The color of your clovers is important. You want 10 of the same color (they say pink) and 8 more of a different color (with a few spares of each).

    The pink is "Pink, think 10"; theyre trying to teach the kids visualization of 10 plus. So, they see 10 pink clovers and five others...10+5 is fifteen clovers total. Then they look at bees. If 7 of the pink clovers have bees, then 8 clovers do not have bees. So your triplet is 15, 7 and 8.

    So, I am wrapping my mind around this pink clover thing...we do lesson 41 tomorrow. So it's like a two step thing? Instead of just memorizing that 7 + 8 = 15, they are indirectly supposed to be learning to group to 10s? I am feeling very lost...

You could make the cute poster, but I drew the animals on the whiteboard and labeled with the words-even in kindergarten. The freehand drawing showed my students to try and that their teacher was not perfect. And the numbers were a visual imprint for some and a decoding activity for some.

    I bought the Rod and Staff math 2 set brand new from MP just this summer and my textbooks, student books and blacklines have the animals instead of the crayons. I would prefer the crayons. I am guessing that this is a mistake and that there was an extra set of the old edition leftover that I got. How do I get the newer version with the crayons? We do not know anything about farming and Clara will never understand the place values with animals. I had a hard enough time teaching her with the Math-U-See houses.     Wow, I've never had a thread I started become a sticky! I feel important! 😀

    All this information and especially the pictures have been really helpful! One more question...
    Did you copy the three animals for the hundreds, tens, and ones at 60% also?

    My husband is going to do the copying tomorrow at work on heavy paper. Then I'll get busy coloring, cutting, and gluing this weekend. Monday we begin! Thanks so much, Lillian

    I used Colomama’s templates from Sodalitas last year and made a Math binder. Attaching pictures here, but it includes the felt board and all charts and posters — ready for use!

    The first 30 lessons or so use boats on an ocean, so blue folders work great. I copied the boats from the book at 60% I believe.

    The rest of the year is the clover patch. I used blue folders as well and then put a green strip at the bottom for grass. Some clovers have bees, some don't. I just photocopied from the teacher manual at 60% again and then flipped the page over, held it up to a window and drew the other side.

    I can't attach pictures on my phone, but I will try when I get home. I know theyre out on this forum somewhere 😀

    I did a presentation in this very thing at last summers Sodalitas.

    The key is TWO file folders. Open them both (make sure the pesky stamped brand label is on the outside or you'll have to look at it everyday). Overlap the middle edges, so that you now have three pages wide. Don't line up that middle folder all the way to the crease or it won't fold closed. Ta-da, it'll work and fit back on the shelf with the TG! Yay!

    I've got pictures to add today after a late night laminating session! I'm not so sure now that my file folders are big enough. I think I'll buy a blue and green poster board and just cut out a strip of it and fold that in half for storage. This way it will be longer to fit all the boats/clovers.
