SC 4 vs. MP 2
Similarities
-Both are modeled after the excellent curriculum of Highlands Latin School.
-Both allow a student to transfer successfully and fully to MP 3 following either program. (See tips below.)
-Both provide strong foundations in reading, writing, and arithmetic.
-Both include enrichment in music, art, science, poetry, geography, and literature.
-Both use cursive instruction at the level of NAC 2.
-Both are fully customizable, so you can exchange any subject up or down as needed to individualize for your student(s).
-Both are easy to teach.
-Both offer essential elements of a classical curriculum: Latin, grammar, poetry, natural science, and more.
-Both provide consistent memory work with the Holy Scriptures to nurture the faith of the child(ren).
-Both offer Individual Lesson Plans for anyone who needs only a few subjects.
-Both provide carefully selected resources to emphasize the true, the good, and the beautiful.
Differences
-More Multi-Modal: SC 4 includes more multi-sensory teaching techniques. While many MP students do not require these and might even become distracted by them, many of our SC students benefit from teaching with multiple modalities and providing additional practice not dependent upon writing to stimulate attention through new practice for the purpose of "over-teaching" and to strengthen automaticity especially in reading, spelling, writing, Latin, and arithmetic.
-Lighter Load: SC 4 is 4-day with a much lighter 5th day to allow for any needed therapies, in-person music lessons (encouraged), physical activity, or “down time” to explore interests, whereas MP 2 is a 5-day program.
-Internally Customizable: In SC 4, customization within the level can occur via 5th-day Review lessons for students who need more review, and 5th-day Delve Deeply lessons provided for students who need more challenge.
-More Over-Teaching: SC 4 provides more incremental, explicit teaching and review in the key areas of reading, spelling, arithmetic, and writing. We assume less proficiency in these areas than does MP 2. Traditional Spelling Book One with added multi-modal lessons serves to review the phonics learned in SC 1-3, the spelling learned in Simply Classical Spelling: Books One and Two, and master new spelling words, rules, and patterns with extra word study for linguistic advancement. With an entire year devoted to Rod & Staff Arithmetic 2, Units 4 and 5, along with continued practice in +/- facts, students master foundations of arithmetic. In Core Skills: Language Arts 1 and 2, we review everything taught in Simply Classical Writing: Books One and Two while giving step-by-step practice and “over-teaching” in composition and grammar.
Children with special needs often have notorious difficulties with written expression. We seek to reverse this!
-Adapted HLS: MP 2 follows the Highlands Latin School curriculum more closely, whereas SC 4 differs in some areas as needed
-Aural and Visual: SC 4 includes fewer writing requirements than in MP 2 with both Christian Studies and poetry lessons aural, visual, and without written assignments. The music of Mozart is impressed upon the minds of students throughout SC 4.
-Adapted Literature: SC 4 offers two fewer literature sets (Prairie School, Beatrix Potter). Prairie School was covered in SC 3, and Beatrix Potter was omitted for these reasons: the older age of some of our SC students, our SC students’ need to study fewer subjects with greater depth, and our 4-day weeks. NOTE: If students want or need additional reading practice, we recommend adding our SC 2 or SC 4 Extended Literature Sets or Beatrix Potter with MP Teacher and Student Guide.
-8-Week Extension: SC 4 offers a free 8-week extension for students who need extra instruction or review before progressing to MP 3 or SC 5. This is included in the SC 4 package.
-Some Advanced Studies: As is our custom, SC 4 provides more advanced, age-suitable studies than in the MP-age equivalent to accommodate our older or "asynchronous" SC students and to compensate for the necessarily lower “grade level” in core skill areas of reading, spelling, writing, and arithmetic. In SC 4, this translates to an introduction to mythology, an in-depth study of mammals, continued lessons in US history, civics, and geography, and great familiarity with Mozart. In this way no student needs to feel “behind” when studying SC 4. Instead, his foundation will be stronger while he advances in knowledge.
Seven Tips for Moving from SC Level 4 to MP 3
1. Strengthen spelling, phonics, oral reading, and independent work habits.
2. Strengthen mastery of +/- facts. Expect to teach R&S 3 more slowly than assigned in MP 3 if needed.
3. Be sure your child's writing skills are strong, or be ready to adapt MP 3 by substituting oral work.
4. Read aloud (both fiction and non-fiction) to improve attention, comprehension, and vocabulary.
5. Use the 8-week extension provided in SC 4, or condense to 4-week review before beginning MP 3.
6. Remember all of the multi-sensory strategies learned from teaching SC 4 and use in MP 3 when needed. Often the MP guides will list many games and practice activities in the front or back of the guides. Implement as many as needed.
7. Remember all of the “over-teaching” strategies learned from teaching SC 4 and use in MP 3 whenever needed.
