    Some SC1 & SC2 teaching questions

For SC2: Can someone clarify the "When" section on Calvin the Caterpillar and the Question Words? The Question words indicate that "when" is time-based, but Calvin says it refers to the sequence of events. Not sure which one I should go by? If it's sequence of events, does he tell the full sequence every day? Or are we only doing part of the caterpillar each day?

For SC1: I originally ordered the Kindergarten Manual with individual plans for SC1 Phonics and Math. I thought we were going to use MPK copybook, hence the Kindergarten Manual, but it's too much for her. I can have her do the SC Copybook without the plans, but I'm wondering if there are additional teaching guidelines I'm missing for her other subjects by not having the complete SC1 Curriculum Manual? I know the PDF's don't always have all the same information as the full CM's.

    Re: Some SC1 & SC2 teaching questions

    Hi, Jen.

At its most basic, "When" is simply time. This can be a time of day, a date, a season, or a year. This may depend on the book or the question.

You can teach from the full Calvin Mini for every story, or you can work from only one circle each day (e.g., "Who"), if language is limited.

For our beginning students, we really could have labeled Calvin Mini's "When" as "Time." However, when the student is ready, you can teach as "Sequence" by introducing words such as before & after. Much of comprehension is linguistic, so feel free to use Calvin in this manner.

When Calvin Mini is too easy, graduate to the more abstract questions of Calvin Long.

As for SC 1 Copybook, you might want the Copybook lessons pdf. Not only do we schedule the Copybook lessons for you, but we also give you extra memory and multi-sensory tips. One example is teaching Roman numerals.

You will not miss any significant Copybook instructions in the Curriculum Manual's introductory Teacher Notes for SC 1, if you do not have the full Curriculum Manual. We say little else there related to Copybook but this (summarized here for you) related to teaching Scripture:

Before he ever writes, teach the verse. Have him repeat. Teach to mastery. The tangible exercise of Copybook then allows him to practice disciplined attention while learning that which is eternally true, good, and beautiful.

Additional teaching notes are in the front of your Copybook.

      Thank you!

Are the teaching notes for phonics and math more in-depth in the full Curriculum Manual? In the PDF plans, there's a 7-bullet list for phonics and for math there's just a note about why R&S was chosen and a reminder to allow sufficient time for math.

It sounds like you have everything except possibly the 1-100 Chart in the Curriculum Manual's Appendix.

Note also the Teacher Notes about creating the flannel board and other teaching tools for arithmetic. We have a forum post or two with tips on those.
