    Sodalitas 2018

I leave tomorrow morning to spend a few days at Menoria Press in Louisville. Among our tasks, we plan to work on Sodalitas 2018.

With up to 7 special-needs breakouts available, we have great flexibility in planning!

Just so you know, we already intend to include sessions of ...
    1) sharing & support
    2) practical teacher training
    3) a model lesson teaching Latin with special needs

We also plan to provide plenty of time to look over curriculum choices -- in a bigger room this year! (Happy problem last year: standing room only!)

And we will set aside time for anyone who wants individualuzed help with curriculum placement.

If you would like to make specific session requests, please do! Our intent is to offer sessions for newcomers as well as good, in-depth help for our veteran attendees.

This is the time to weigh in. We especially need specifics on the teacher-training sessions you would find most helpful, if you plan to attend.

A training on re-teaching reading to older children (4th grade to middle school), using SC alone or combined with MP core materials would be awesome!

      Re: Sodalitas 2018

I am allll about helping other mamas out with the non-academic challenges of teaching special needs kids. Put me wherever that need is. Happy as a clam to help.

ETA: I am, of course, also happy to assist in teacher training if applicable. I can offer specific support with fine motor, arts, crafts, reading, writing and related language arts.

As far as classes I personally want to take? My mind is basically blank on that score. I’ll come back if I can think of something.

        Cheryl,

Thank you so very much for coming to the Forum here to seek input. I might be able to chime in with more....but a couple of my take-aways from last year I think are already being addressed:

        1) Having all MP materials (to include SC materials) in one place vs. being divided up. I had to run back and forth, looking and evaluating the MP2 and SC3 materials. So having everything in one big place so the 'helper people' can address attendees questions and needs.

        2) Having plenty of individualized help for those newbies and veterans in planning out their next year. (Just too hard to offer that in a session where people are wanting to share their individual stories.) Our special kiddos just don't fit in a box. Almost all of us are customizing to meet the needs we are facing, which are unique to us. I had to spend my first SG in 2016 pouring over the materials, seeking individual help and missed many of the breakouts because it just took too long to figure out (remember Christine, Michelle and Susan? HeeHee You were all so helpful, as were Cheryl and MichelleT.)

        3) My mind keeps coming back to those of us with kiddos over 10/11. We have things we are dealing with and I can't figure out how to propose it.....but essentially, addressing issues specifically related to adolescents and teens with special needs. I know there are many of us facing this right here on this Forum and I'd love to see us tap into the wisdom of the veteran moms who have walked this road (again, with kiddos over, say 10/11.)

        4) It sure seems as though I'm reading right here on the forum repeated references to: memory issues, executive function, working memory. Hmmm.....just wondering if these issues could be addressed with a clearing house of great, proven strategies and ideas???

Thank you again. You continue to bless us mommas. May you know how much His light shines through you!

Onboard with SusanP with working memory and executive function. This is a newly identified struggle for my son and I'm groveling in the dark with how to adress it.

I think a breakout on SC writing specifically would be great. SC3 was a challenge to teach at first, but we've found our groove now. I know writing is a big struggle for lots of our kids and will continue to be for years to come. So, teaching writing to upper elementary kids, like SusanP said, in the 10-11 and older age range.

I also struggle a lot with spelling. Would be interested in a SC Spelling session. I get confused with all the different ways to teach each day differently, write high wednesday, colorful words, spelling games, etc

Ummm Anita, I think I am just going to tag along beside you like a puppy. I feel like I've got the academic part mostly under control for now, but it is the non-academic areas that I struggle the most. Maybe from so many years of focusing on academics perhaps to the exclusion of other important areas.

HA! I’m the Mama Care Bear. Official Tend-er and Hugger for SC. That’s my niche, for sure. We cannot have successful homeschools if we have struggling mamas. I’m here for our kiddos — certainly — but mamas have a special place in my heart and mission. Tag along! (You’ll get the most hugs that way.)

Working memory, executive function (which is of course a giant umbrella) are of interest to me as well. Practical, simple ways to support those functions.

Writing is also a big one for me. This is the weakest area for my children right now.

A model lesson on Latin sounds great.

I have 14 years experience dealing with EF and working memory issues (and most of that time I had no idea what the problem was). I would be happy to head a session on this if Cheryl felt it was appropriate.

I think someone mentioned the possibility of Homeaway for a group lodging scenario (I stay away from Airbnb as they now require you to check a box to accept some "interesting" social/cultural terms). Anyways...I found the following the other night. Would sleep 6 adults and is only $175/night -- total! It's 3-4 miles from HLS.

That makes four of us so far (my good friend Hollie, aka MP partner-in-crime, said she's game to join!)

I think most of us would come in on the Sunday and want to chill on Tuesday before heading home so that would get us the 3 night minimum. I have permission from hubby to stay for the teacher training this year and he's okay with the house price adjustment for the last night or two since there would probably be less of us at that point.

We are currently unemployed and I have NO IDEA how to plan (beyond “I’ll drive 18 hours to SG if I have to”). So I’m rhetorically “in” for the house. Coughing up money and firming up booking dates will have to wait until we know if we will have a place to live by Christmas.

That still leaves 3 of us for sure; Jen, Holly, and Michelle with a few beds to spare.

I will talk to my dear hubby tonight about teacher training.

Jen you're in for teacher training, how about Holly?

I'm pretty sure we'll have more mama's join us, Anita if she can swing it. But, even with three people and we round up to $200 a night to include taxes, we're looking at $66 a night.
