    Interim & supplemental activities for 12 y/o with DS

    Our 12 y/o with DS is mostly non-verbal (we are still working hard on verbal communications; cannto afford a therapist at this point) and has completed SC Level B. She did really well, but the math portions were definitely a bit of a challenge.

    That said, her school day is incredibly short. Being 12, she isn't as playful and active so a full day of play isn't necessarily in the cards for her (if she wanted to, that would be great). How can we continue to support her learning and growing in the interim during holiday breaks and even supplemental activities we can give her (both with her and independently) during the day after "official school" time?

    Any and all ideas and guidances are welcome. Thank you so much.

    What about listening to books on CD? Having her own garden? Doing a bug collection?


      In addition to Alicia's good ideas, you might consider working on fine-motor activities, such as the Scissors Books, the newer Cut & Paste Book you might not yet own, the Coloring (Alphabet or Numbers) books, or any of the Rod & Staff books she did not finish. Given her age, she might be able to extend the day a bit more. If she does not mind "younger" books, consider adding Level A as a delightful supplement. Many of our families of children with intellectual disability teach from Level A and Level B simultaneously. Level A targets oral language, both expressive and receptive, which can be adapted to include sign, picture cards, a communication device, or verbal approximations. If needed, you can change some questions or tasks to yes/no responses in whatever form she currently uses. Level A can be a nice morning activity, a rest time activity, or a bedtime routine. Some of the lessons include gross-motor components which might be helpful for her. Here is the link to Level A. See what you think.

      If Level A looks too "young" for your daughter, you might reread Level B read-alouds and add something math related, such as a daily (or twice daily) number game. Hi Ho! Cherry-O was a favorite of ours for fine-motor skills, counting, and number sense (all in one!) Eventually you can work up to more advanced numbering, such as Chutes & Ladders. This could assist her math abilities more than anything formal this summer.

      Two more ideas:
      - If she needs review, select the Level B 8-week Extension at the back of your Level B Curriculum Manual.
      - If she is ready to move on in everything except math, simply add the above math game(s) each day and jump right into Level C! She will find her days lengthen a bit with Level C.
