Should I keep them together or not?

I have a new 8yo who is dyslexic. We have been working through Logic of English Foundations. So far, she's finished A and is working through B. I also have a 6.5yo girl who isn't dyslexic and is also working through Foundations B. I am trying to decide if I should keep the girls together doing MP 1st grade this coming year or if I should do Simply Classical 2 with my 8yo and MP 1 with my 6yo or if I should put both of them in Simply Classical 2. The younger girl has no learning issues at all and the SC2 might go too slow for her. The MP 1 might leave my 8yo in the dust. BUT trying to do both, might be the end of me. lol I still have 3 students in higher levels to work with, too. So, what would you do? Thank you for your help!

Hi, Lisa. I would not try to combine them for reading. You might combine them for other things (MP First Enrichment?), but reading, spelling, and possibly also math and writing, will be best taught 1:1 for your daughter with dyslexia.

My suggestion is MP First for your younger daughter and SC 2 for your older, as this will also lesson comparisons between the two children.

Not what I was hoping to hear, but I know you are right. Sigh. My granddaughter joined our school once Covid hit and I just put her with my 8yo. She's been doing very well, but I feel like I've been holding her back some this summer. I didn't want to buy anything for the end of the year, since at that time we thought she would be going back to her school. Now, she's here to stay because of Covid. lol I'm happy, but it's been a learning curve since I didn't really know where she was with her learning. It's really nice to have another child without dyslexia or learning disabilities though! My last five kids all have some kind of diagnosis and it's been a real struggle, so to have one that doesn't is a relief! lol Thank you for your help. I already bought two of both courses, not sure which I was going to use, so we are ready to go.

Having used Logic of English before, I can attest that you will have a pleasant transition to MP1! Did you have a tentative start date? I might wait until you have finished Book B (where the long vowel says its name) before moving into MP1. If you purchased Book D from FSR, then you can go through that alternately. In my experience, LoE is great at getting those littles reading, but MP is phenomenal in getting the writing component to match the reading. LoE really treated writing as optional, and I've seen great advances in my children's abilities to read and spell with the level of writing required in MP. I especially like Traditional Spelling!!

Now, my kids are the opposite ages of yours in that my youngest was late to the reading game, so you should do some mental assessments as to whether it would embarrass your elder dyslexic boy to struggle in front of a younger child. With that said, I have started having both of them stand side-by-side and say all of the phonograms (that they've learned to date) on the LoE flashcards in the morning after the pledge and opening prayer two days a week. It's just enough healthy competition to make the eldest not slack on this. YMMV (your mileage may vary). The rest of our lessons are 100% separate.

Yes! We are just at that point in LOE B and I did buy FSR D. I started D today, since we just introduced silent E long vowels. It fit perfectly and you are right in that LOE just doesn't have much writing. I am hoping that it'll fill those holes. Thank you for your advice!
