    R&S: How much to do on a page

    I heard they do every R&S math problem on every page at HLS. For both my NT and struggling kids, I've always assigned the full first page (where the concept is introduced), one or two rows of the new facts on the second page and about 4-5 review problems, and 4-5 clocks or money from the second page. Is this inadequate? We've started doing flashcards more faithfully this year, but the kids definitely don't have their facts down. In their workbooks, they sometimes look at similar problems on the page for the later answers rather than thinking back through the problem when it comes up again.

    A few tips:

    - Assign pieces of cardstock to cover 1/3-1/2 pages at a time. Not only does this reduce "overwhelm" but helps prevent looking back and copying answers. If they work as you travel along the desk areas, you can see whether these are being used as they work.
    - Add more fact practice. This could be in the form of extra rows, extra worksheets, daily fact drills, or non-writing fact practice.
    - Allow the minimal requirements in any strong areas (e.g., money, if this is strong). After 3 months or so if you see a new area strengthened, you could lessen the requirement in that area.
    - Play mental math games in the car, card/board games in the afternoon or evenings, +/- facts or skip count to jumping rope, etc. You may not have as many dr appts as we did, but to this day Michelle computes total tiles in the waiting room floor & ceiling using arrays, simply because this is how we passed the time years ago!

      Until my eldest had her facts memorized, she also struggled with being bogged down by speed. The slow pace made the whole thing take too long. Once we prioritized flashcards, writing the answer wasn't the hard part. Michelle T had the best tip over in K-8. She said to spread the flashcards out on the dining room table and scroll through the cards that way. I set a stopwatch, have her call out the answers with me behind to see what is missed, then she sets a baseline and tries to beat it every try. We literally had to do that 3 times a day for a week, then we did it twice each morning for a week, then we did it twice every other day, then twice two times a week. Now, I have her run through those (in a different order every week to challenge her, but you could leave it the same) once a day. It's amazing how quickly the facts evaporate when not put into dutiful maintenance mode. Just 10 days on vacation caused us to lose so much ground. It's frustrating.
