    Core Skills 3 vs SC Spelling 2

    C is all over the place in SC3 (nothing new here!) but I'm wondering if I need to change course with Core Skills. Here's where he's at across the Level:

    Writing - Week 6 (saving the rest for summer)
    Math - Week 17 (will continue over the summer)
    Cursive - saving for summer
    Phonics - Week 23
    Literature - Done (doing Beatrix Potter as a fill in until the end of May)
    Spelling - we did some dictation work to make sure he could distinguish various letter and team/blend sounds. We then worked on hearing the difference between words that have magic e and those that don't. I'm currently trying to retest him on Book One, lessons 1-26 (where we stopped because he wasn't getting it). The plan is to then follow the SC Spelling weekly format for any words he still doesn't know how to spell. Then, we'll finish the book and start Book Two.

    Since he's not in SC Spelling 2, would it be okay to hold off on the rest of Core Skills 3? We've reached syllabication, vowel teams, three sounds of y, etc in Core Skills but he doesn't have it being reinforced/taught in spelling yet so I'm thinking it might backfire on us. He needs the spelling and phonics work but he doesn't see the point since he can read now. I explained the importance of learning how our language works but, you know, he's 10. And a boy. So I'm wondering if focusing on Book One might be the best course right now, both confidence and frustration-wise?

    Yes, I think that sounds good. I like Core Skills for students who are thoroughly on track or even a little bit ahead, but if he is still learning those skills, feel free to wait on Core Skills 3.
