New MP stuff - will it be added to SC?

i just noticed the new spelling workbooks for Traditional Spelling 1 &2. Will these be added to SC4/5/6? Also, “summer cursive” after MP1. Will this be added to SC2?

    This is the plan:
    • Summer Cursive - Optional Supplement to SC 2.
    • TS I Practice - Optional Supplement to SC 4.
    • TS II Practice - Optional Supplement to SC 5&6.
    • EGR Practice - Optional Supplement to SC 5&6.
I love all of these new books!

See especially the EGR practice workbook. This will be an excellent supplement to our oral EGR.

    Thanks for asking --

Will the EGR Practice workbook be added to the SC 5 & 6 lesson plans, or will it be something you add on your own? I'm wondering, because the pace in the TOC is for the regular curriculum, not SC, right?

We will add EGR Practice to the SC 5 & 6 lesson plans when these books become available in hard copy.

You are correct, the pace in the EGR Practice is for regular MP Third. However, the lesson plan additions will be possible to do on your own while you wait:

        SC 5&6 One-Year
The "Week" corresponds exactly to the week in SC 5&6 lesson plans.
"Day 1" in the TOC will be Wednesday.
"Day 2" in the TOC will be Thursday.

        - In SC 5&6 One-Year, we study one lesson per week. When EGR Practice says "Week 2" exercises, these will be the same exercises that will benefit our students on Week 2.
        - In MP Third, students study EGR only two days a week, hence the Day 1, Day 2.
        - In SC 5&6 we take smaller bites with more cumulative review of the new grammar rules, so we study EGR 5 days a week.
        - Insert Day 1 (Wed) and Day 2 (Thurs) according to the week in the SC plans, and all will be well.

        SC 5&6 Two-Year
The "Week" is exactly half of the corresponding week in SC 5&6 two-year lesson plans. (We spend two weeks per lesson.)
Example: Week 2 of EGR Practice will occur on Week 4 of SC 5&6 two-year.
"Day 1" in the TOC for Week 2 will be Wednesday Week 4.
"Day 2" in the TOC for Week 2 will be Thursday Week 4.

Anticipating this question by someone who might be thinking ahead, "Why not Friday?"
A: In SC 5&6 both one-year and two-year we teach
        Intro to Comp
on Fridays. Students do not need EGR Practice on top of
        Intro to Comp
        .

I hope that makes sense! We will work on this to update both SC 5&6 guides when English Grammar Practice workbooks are available in hard copy.

        Thanks for asking!

I am confused by some of this answer. Michael said the above Grammar book is going to be in the MP2 core, alongside Prima. Would you be adding this to 5/6 just for extra writing practice since the EGR 1 workbook is not scheduled?

*slightly confused in why scheduled in 5/6, not 4, with Prims, though the two Core Skills books in 4 are plenty!!*

I'm sorry if I confused you, Christine! If it helps, these worksheets are not tied to our English Grammar Recitation (EGR) program. We called them English Grammar Practice (EGP) for simplicity and to distinguish them from EGR. The exercises in EGP cover other aspects of language arts, including reading comprehension and rhyme to give two examples, that are outside the stricter scope of EGR. At the same time, I suppose EGP could function as a very gentle introduction to the idea behind EGR, that is, the idea of grammar as its own subject.

EGP is scheduled alongside Prima Latina in the 2nd grade CM as both involve grammar, but they are not tied together in the sense that week 2 of EGP must be done alongside Lesson 2 of Prima. That only applies to our grade-based packages. For the Simply Classical track, I defer to Cheryl on whether EGP works better alongside Prima in SC 4 or after it in SC 5 & 6.

            HTH!

Sorry for the confusion, howiecram. If you wanted to include EGP alongside Prima in SC 4, you could certainly do this. I agree with you that we have plenty of writing and grammar in SC 4, and it seems that with the introduction of more formal grammar through EGR in SC 5&6, the EGP make nice brief exercises for our SC 5&6 students.

To keep things simple regarding the TOC, we can still begin EGP Week 2 in SC Week 2, whether SC 4 or SC 5&6, even though EGP is tied strictly neither to Prima nor to EGR.

For anyone visiting for the first time:
              TOC - table of contents
EGP - (new) English Grammar Practice
              SC - Simply Classical
              EGR - English Grammar Recitation
              Prima - Prima Latina
howiecram - real name Christine, our resident SC detective!

Good questions -- they help us clarify. Thanks.

Cheryl, please talk me through an EGR lesson.

Overall, I'm planning on doing one year pace SC 5/6 with my 6th grade SC son and neurotypical 3rd grade daughter together. I just received our entire curriculum for next year. Now, there's new material to consider.

I purchased EGR student books for both kids because I don't have a place to write out the lessons on a board. So, I figured we could just be selective of what we actually write in the books.

How would these new Grammar Practice be used? Trying to debate whether to buy or just continue on my path.

DD12- Classic Core 6th Grade w/ First Form
DD10- Classic Core 4th Grade w/ Greek Myths and American History

                We've completed:
Classic Core Jr. kindergarten thru grade 5
                Simply Classical levels B, C, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5/6

You will already be using the EGR student books. These will have plenty of practice tied directly to your lessons. I think you should continue on your path!

I guess I'm officially becoming an ''old MPer"...looking at all the newly released materials and waxing nostalgic about not being able to use it. Ha!

My son is going to use Traditional Spelling 2 and my little first grader is going to use TS1....opinion on supplemental sheets for that? I was going to skip it for my son, but possibly add it for the little one. I figure spelling is enough of a bear with my son, I'm not adding extra fuel to that fire.

I bought the student practice sheets and student workbook for both levels, I'm feeling the extra sheets are just that....extra.

You are correct. They are extra. We added them because our teachers developed them for our students to complete independently as homework to practice the skills taught in TS. They are great to have for independent practice and for those who need a little extra work in mastering the lesson focus.

                      Blessings,
