    SC 5 & 6: Big Announcements

We are pleased to present to you the tentative book list for SC Levels 5 and 6!

    This is the title:
Simply Classical Levels 5 and 6: Grammar, Greece, and Gratitude

You may wonder why this is divided into two levels, 5 and 6, yet it has one title! This is the reason:
Most of our students will spend two years covering this material. Although sold as one package with one set of teaching resources, it is two years of study. We realize that by SC 5, some older SC students are entering (or firmly inside of) the teen years and want to tackle the material more quickly. For this reason we offer two options for 5-6:

    One-Year Accelerated
    OR
    Two-Year Standard

We intend to do this for 5-6, 7-8, 9-10, and 11-12. Note that the two-year standard is the pace for most. This means that you will need to purchase only one set of materials for two years. Unless you want to add any of the optional supplements, your costs will be minimal the second year.

    Two-Year Advantages
For students who need the standard two-year pace, the two-year arrangement will have many benefits. First, it allows you to expand your enrichment offerings to make them truly teachable with no rushing. (See Creating Art, Music Appreciation, and Read-Aloud Set). Second, not only will this save money for families over two years, it will most closely approximate the well-crafted progression of Highlands Latin School and Memoria Press with curriculum continuity. We preserve our intent of a more gentle pacing, more incremental and explicit teaching, less required writing, and more multi-sensory components, but we do this while emphasizing remediation in a context of both classical and Christian studies. The advanced content places this curriculum far above and beyond what would normally be taught in middle school special education, yet with visually uncluttered materials and a pace at which students can truly learn.

    Breaking it down further:
The One-Year Accelerated will be for these students
    1) Older SC students who can manage a more rigorous, full day with a faster pace.
    2) College-bound SC students who will need to quicken the pace of their SC studies.
    3) SC students with higher intelligence or great stamina who can process information quickly and memorize well, but whose primary difficulty is mild ADHD, mild specific learning disability (e.g., dyslexia), or mild autism.
    4) SC students who are ready to progress more quickly than the typical SC pace, but who are not ready for all of the writing and rigor of MP Third.
    5) SC students who wish to follow the One-Year Accelerated pace even if modifying it somewhat (e.g., slowing the one-year to create one-and-a-half years).

The Two-Year Standard is for these students:
    1) SC students who thrive with a slow-and-steady approach to learning with ample time for everything to "sink in."
    2) SC students for whom the age matches the ability level.
    3) SC students with intellectual disability or borderline intellectual disability, including our students with Down syndrome.
    4) SC students in busy families/classrooms with multiple children at different levels who cannot logistically be accelerated every day for an entire year.
    5) SC students for whom medical conditions, immaturity, stamina, behavioral difficulties, or moderate-to-severe specific learning disabilities prevent studying multiple subjects daily.

We intend to offer these one- and two-year options for 7-8, 9-10, and 11-12. After SC 11-12, an older student may graduate from this modified high school, and a younger student can transfer to MP 7 for his high school. (This is advanced material!)

Q: Is SC 5-6 the same as MP Third?
A: No. Here are some differences:

    Spelling
We continue our phonics and word-study approach to spelling through Traditional Spelling Book Two. Suffixes, prefixes, syllabication, phonetic patterns, homonyms, and more will be covered with an in-depth approach as in Book One. The format will be familiar to returning SC students and learned quickly by our newcomers.

    Science
SC 5-6 Science covers natural and physical science through lessons and experiments. Science also includes lessons on health (nutrition, manners, germs), self-care (exercise, posture), keeping one's body (skin, hair, nails) and room clean. The unit on health & self-care is only one of seven units but will serve us well to review and reinforce everything taught in Myself & Others. We covered Mammals in SC 4. (Anyone who missed this, would like to add Mammals, or who would prefer to study Mammals may simply Customize.)

    Math & Latin
We add multi-sensory and movement games to our teaching and review of both math & Latin. We divide Latin into smaller "bites" per day, rather than teaching only 3 days per week.

    Writing Instruction
Our Grammar, Literature, and Composition will be covered within all of these:
    - Introduction to Composition, which correlates perfectly with the Literature selections. We chose this over ATFF to assist our SC students' comprehension of Literature. All outlining, dictation, and other writing in this program comes directly from the student's Literature reading.
-Core Skills: Language Arts 3, which follows CS:LA 1 and 2 from SC 4.
    - Latina Christiana, in which we retain all of the written components. This will include writing, translating, spelling, and learning both semantics and syntax of language.
    - NAC 3 Scriptures & Manners, in which the student reviews cursive and then writes sentences and full paragraphs in cursive
    - My Thankfulness Journal, in which the student practices reflective gratitude through writing
    - Timeline Composition & Sketchbook, in which events "come alive"
    - States and Capitals -- by now our SC students have spent two full years with these states and capitals, so they will be well-prepared to use (and may enjoy!) the maps and labels in the Student Book.

    Oral Responses
We omit the hefty written components of Christian Studies, Classical Studies, Literature, and Science. The Golden Children's Bible will be taught orally, for example, with flash cards used for memory verses; yet it retains its pre-eminence in the curriculum. Similarly, Greek Myths will not require the writing of those unfamiliar names, but we cover all of the material orally and with flash cards. The beautiful Timeline program will give students a visual, historical reference for all events. We plan to omit the Literature Student Guides, but teach orally from the Literature Teacher Guides. Students will receive vocabulary studies, answer discussion questions orally, and work on the board or copy onto tablet paper whenever writing might be desired. (Of course anyone is free to add the Student Guides from Christian Studies, Greek Myths, and Literature, but they are optional for SC 5 and 6, not required.)

    Listening
We add Courage and a Clear Mind: True Adventures of the Ancient Greeks, CD, Jim Weiss, to enhance our study of the Greeks, Greece, and the ancient world.

    Enrichment
With the omission of so many writing components, this frees us to add Music Appreciation and Creating Art! Music Appreciation will include many of the selections with which SC students are now familiar, but we can delve deeply into the composers, historical context, musical significance, and theory. Creating Art links color, design, and theory with the Christian and Classical Studies, Literature, and seasons covered in SC 5-6.

    Read-Alouds
We removed some of the read-alouds that some SC students might find troublesome, and we substituted with some that my children and I found especially soothing and inspiring, namely Shadrach and The Little Lame Prince. The Two-Year plan especially allows for Read-Alouds to feature prominently in your school day and home life.

Best of all, with the Two-Year approach, we hope to hear fewer concerns about not having sufficient time. We hope to hear something more consistent with our desires: "He made noticeable progress, and we completed everything with depth and delight!" We WANT this to be multum, non multa, studied deeply over time. We never want to short-change music, art, and read-alouds due to perceived or actual scrunched time; rather, we want to make these enriching parts of every day. And we want everything to be truly teachable for you.

We will announce when One- and Two-Year Lesson Plans are fully formatted and available for purchase.

This is so exciting, Cheryl! We will be anxiously awaiting it here. I had considered 4th for new users this year, but neither of my children can keep up with the amount of written work, and I'm afraid the pace would just be too much. We are all so lucky and blessed to have you!

The only question I can thinknof is will they complete all of Latina Christiana in 5-6?

We cover the first half of LC in 5-6 and the second half of LC in 7-8 to prepare for completion of FFL in 9-10 and 11-12.

As always, this can be customized with the more rigorous MP plans for any of our budding linguists who can manage all of the grammar and vocabulary at a faster pace.

So in many ways, SC 5-6 would be an alternative to MP 3M and SC 7-8 likely an alternative to MP 4M? I love having so many well thought out options.

              It sounds really good!

I may have missed this information, but is the Classical Studies 1 created just for SC or is that an existing product? It looks like that will be a TM, optional student guide and flashcards. Does that contain the greek myths teaching without using the existing Greek Myths TM?

Good catch, Laura. That list should include D'Aulaires' Greek Myths Teacher Guide.

Classical Studies I is the MP original, as is Christian Studies I.

I will admit I have not had time to fully read all the wonderful info above. However, after a quick scan, will SC just not use the EGR books at all or be introduced later? I know you were trying to cut down on writing. Can EGR be done orally (just use the recitations book?), or do you need the workbook to make it a complete program?

Also will you schedule Astronomy at all, or will you move to the R&S books for the remainder of SC science?

                      Just now saw this --

EGR could most certainly be added orally or with the workbook, if people want this and think it would be helpful.

We do intend to include Astronomy at some point. This year the overview with natural science and health content seemed better suited to this level. Reasons: We already have many large names (Christian Studies Hebrew names and places, Classical Studies Greek names and places, US States & Capitals to spell). My son studied Astronomy much later than the SC 5 & 6 level, after he learned the Greek myths well, and seemed to learn more than if he had struggled with those unfamiliar names at that time.

However, all is Tentative, so we can be persuaded differently about either EGR or Astronomy. Make your case!

I'm not even sure where we'll be after SC4, but I kind of like the idea of doing an oral overview of EGR I during SC 5-6, then adding the student book in 7-8. This might also make transitioning to MP easier since LC and EGR I are done at the same time in the main cores.

ETA: having taught Astronomy in our co-op , I completely agree with the decision to wait on that!

I love that idea. Thank you! The extra burst of Grammar fits the level's title and the needs of our SC 5-6 students very well.

Here is the Revised Tentative Book List - updated to include EGR orally and D'Aulaires' Greek Myth Teacher

We envision that this will not cost as much as two distinct levels, even with these additions, yet this will take most families through two years of in-depth study and plenty of enrichment.

                            Cheryl,
I am sorry, but I am still confused by the Classical Studies. It is listed separate from Greek Myths but I don't know of any Classical Studies 1 TM, workbook and flashcards. Is this sold as part of one of the MP cores? Does it have a different name?

I think that title is based on the sequence given here: https://www.memoriapress.com/curricu...sical-studies/ which lists Greek Myths as "Year 1".

ETA: Looking at it again though, it does look like Classical Studies I is something completely different; the booklist gives both the D'Aulaire's Student Book and a Classical Studies I student book. Hmmm...I'm stumped.
