Languages....where do we go from here

Hi,

My oldest son went to public 7th grade this year. He tried 3rd Form online watching recorded classes, but it didn't work out. Having a hurricane and a family medical crisis really put a damper on getting off to a good start with it. He also has very good experience with French. Here are my options as of now:

1) Have him take Henle 1 live next year, because it is after school hours
2)Have him take high school Latin 1 online with our state school, which uses the classical pronunciation (free, at your own pace, and can begin in June)
3)Have him take high school French online with our state school,
4) other options???

I'm not sure why no has posted yet. Hopefully some other parents will chime in soon with their thoughts. Until then, I'd like to ask a couple of follow-up questions:

1) You mentioned Henle I through MPOA will be possible next year since it's after school. I infer that your son will be returning to public school for 8th?
2) Will there be any other after-school classes?
3) Do you know what Latin text your state school uses?

With a little more information, we'll help you figure out a plan!

Hi Christina!

Looking at your options, my vote would be for the online Henle class after school. I love Henle I (it's what my oldest two did instead of the Forms, and is what I am using to try to slowly learn it myself), and I think he would really appreciate the content. And having a live class for it would always get my vote over a recorded, self-paced version, especially for boys who may need that impetus to be on track throughout the year.

Don't get me wrong - I love French, and I think that would be a great thing to take advantage of in addition to Latin, but maybe for the last two years of high school or something.

Sorry for not replying sooner...

My son (12) is currently using Henle at home. We did not do a class for him this year. My daughter started at third form in the academy a couple of years ago in 7th. It really is a serious endeavor even under the best of circumstances. Given everything going on in at the time (new baby in the house) a live class was the way to go for my daughter, but that was her school. She wasn't trying to add it into an already scheduled public middle school schedule. Live classes don't slow down the pace to wait for one child who gets behind. My son is different. I have at least made it into second form myself and I have a 4yo and not a nursing baby. We switched him to Henle this year and he is doing well with the new MP guide. So far it is mostly review and he was only done with the first unit of second form last year. If you are looking at Henle units 1-5 class, it will probably be all review for a student who has started into third form already. I am afraid that might be boring for your son. If you are just trying to hold ground this next year that might be fine, but he won't make a lot of progress. If you are looking at the second part of Henle, I am afraid that it would be too much to essentially add all of third and fourth form content to an after school situation, especially one filled with other serious issues at home.

I have been looking at kolbe for my daughter for science and math plans (we are bummed to be outpacing the MP video lessons) and I found that they have self paced classes with teacher grading for many of their homeschool courses. They use Third Form Latin and have a self-paced option for $600. You could use the spring semester to have him review second form, start third form when he is ready, and he would have the opportunity to spend time over the summer on Latin when he doesn't have as much going on. It isn't free like the state virtual school, but it still uses the Memoria Press materials that he is used to and would keep him moving forward without having to wait until fall.

Adding a bit...if it is the second half of Henle 1 class you are targeting, I would suggest having him start reviewing Henle units 1-5 now. You didn't state what he is doing for Latin right now. Things can get rusty quickly. He could probably get a jump on some of the content from the new units over the summer so that it wasn't all new in the fall.

2) I'd like to keep it at one class. He can take a 4:00 class or later on Wednesdays due to early release. The rest of the week he can take a 5:00 class.
3) The state school writes their own online material. There will be no official text. I'm not crazy about the idea of Latin with them, because unfortunately you get what you pay for . We tried math with the state online school last year, and it was a big disappointment.

Since he has taken FFL and SFL while not having touched it in a year, how would it be transitioning to Henle. Would the first Henle course be too familiar? Would the sencond Henle 1 course be better? Those classes are all TBA, so I don't even know if he can take that one. If he could, he could do the summer Henle refresher.

On a side note, I'm looking at a classical charter school that uses Wheelock for my second son for further down the road. How does Wheelock compare to MP?

Thank you for the additional information. Since your son has had a year break from Latin, and since you were previously disappointed with the state school, I would take MPOA's "Henle I, Units 1-5." It will review what he learned in FFL and SFL while still introducing some new material, such as 3rd person pronouns and the perfect passive system. The mix of new and review material will make management of this first live after-school class much easier. Furthermore, this course will then set your son up to potentially take "Henle Latin I, Units 6-14" in 9th and "Henle Latin II: Caesar" in 10th, providing two high-school credits of Latin. You could then switch to French as Sarah mentioned, or continue with Latin.

Wheelock is a standard, college-level text. It will move much more quickly than Henle in terms of grammar, vocabulary, and translation. I do think Henle is much more appropriate for a high-school student, or really any student. My son took Second Form through MPOA last year as a 7th grader. He did well. But I knew Third Form was going to be a challenge for him combined with the rest of his load this year. So, I thumbed through Henle at the Conference and really liked it. We made the choice to start him at the beginning, Henle 1-5, to build confidence, knowing that a good portion of it would be review. He LOVES Henle, and he is gaining confidence. We love Henle so much that I've switched my older daughter (grade 5) to Henle at the break,. I know this isn't the suggested plan, but it's working. She and I are both enjoying the change. The Forms are very well written and easy to use. I still plan to use Prima through 1st/2nd Form with my littles and then also switch them to Henle when I feel they are ready.

SO, long story short..I agree that starting at the beginning, with a live class would be the best in your situation. I hope it works out for you!

P.S. Mrs. Cutrer is fabulous if she happens to have a class that works for you!

Thank you Katie and everyone! This is all very helpful. I also remember someone chiming in on a past thread that Henle is very helpful with the Latin mass, which might be in our future. It sounds like Henle I 1-5 is the right way to go.

It is, due to its inclusion of Christian content. Wheelock's, in contrast, is secular.

Thank you. As for looking ahead for my second son, the charter school here uses: Latin A (from the Latin Alive! Series) Volume 1, Chapters 1-17
in sixth grade and Latin Alive! (Wheelock's Latin) in seventh grade. I am going off of their curriculum map. This is a Barney Charter Hillsdale College Affiliated charter school. If you have any input on jumping from either FFL to the 6th grade or from SFL to the seventh grade that would be helpful.

I appreciate the feedback. I'm trying to discern if the second son will homeschool, go to a classical charter, a public magnet school, or Catholic school. I am grateful for so many choices, but it can be overwhelming.

I'd be happy to help, but can you clarify about seventh grade. Latin Alive! and Wheelock are two very different programs! Does the school use one or both in seventh grade? A student who has done the Forms, even just FFL and SFL, will have no problem with Latin Alive! in terms of difficulty. The only issue might be a different order of teaching content. For Wheelock's, the background given by the Forms will certainly help.
