  • Seventh Grade Classical Studies

For many reasons I will be switching my current 6th grader to the accelerated track next year. She is already there in several subjects and this will require less tweaking than buying 7M.
I am unsure about classical studies, though.
She has not done FMOG, but I'd like her to do Book of the Ancient Greeks instead. Frankly, she is getting tired of Famous Men and I think she'll love Dorothy Mills. My plan is to have her do the rest of 7M classical (Greek Alphabet and Horatius) along with the Mills guide next year, and then do Iliad and Odyssey in 8th (to take a whole year to do these more slowly).
The whole rest of her curriculum will be exactly as 7A has in the plans, but swapping in Novare Earth Science.
Does that sound like an okay plan?

    Angela,

That sounds like a great adjustment to fit her better!

An option for fast-tracking FMOG would be to have her simply read the text (no workbook/flashcards/tests) before starting Ancient Greeks next fall. They are also available for listening on Librivox, thought the readers can be spotty at times.

One note on Novare Earth Science (and you probably already know this, but just in case!) is that it has the co-requisite of pre-algebra for math. There are some percent slope problems that require a bit of higher thinking. My current eighth grader is taking it this year (and loving it!) but he's in Algebra I this year. For that reason, the math was no problem. Perhaps another family or Cindy Davis can speak to completing is concurrently with pre-algebra. My current 6A student will do Novare Physical Science next year along with 7A.

    Hope this helps!

I did not realize that Earth Science required more math than Physical Science. If that is the case, my dd and I will both be very disappointed since we are so excited to do Earth next year.
She is actually doing R&S 7 math this year since we were a year ahead and I didn't want to push her into prealgebra this soon. R&S 7 does introduce some algebraic type problems, and we'll do COTR next year. Has this worked successfully for anyone?
Hopefully Cindy will share some insight!

I believe it was originally Cindy who suggested to us the co-requisite of Pre-Alg with Earth Science. It sounds like you should be fine. When you get to the math problems just plan to take time to figure them out and master them. It sounds like you're daughter will be up to it!

Yes, our 7th grade students take Earth Science. Some are taking pre-algebra concurrently and some are taking Math7, so we just work through the math as needed.

I think the math in Physical Science is more demanding, so we offer Physical Science in 8th grade (concurrent pre-algebra or algebra).

Awesome! That's what we'll do then.
