  • Rod and Staff Grammar in 7th and 8th

We have ended up sticking with R&S for grammar and really enjoy it. I'm looking to purchase 7A for my dd next year and see that R&S 8 is included and used for two years. Is there a reason to do it that way rather than just use the 7th grade book in 7th and the 8th grade book in 8th? I'm always happy to save a few dollars , so that part sounds nice. I guess I'd just like reassurance from others who have done this before we skip a grade level.

    Angela,
Here is our vote of endorsement! We find it to be fine to do. The eighth grade book is pretty big, and usually they are getting into more in-depth work in Latin, so it is nice to not be so rushed of a "lesson a day" pace.

      Angela,

The 7th and 8th grade books have the same content in them, but 8th grade takes it a little further with more work on clauses. As Sarah said, our students are getting lots of grammar through Latin, so we felt it wasn't necessary to complete both books or to spend so much time in English grammar. We chose the 8th grade book so we could expose students to the topics in 8th grade that aren't fully developed in 7th. We feel a better use of middle school time (for those students getting Latin), is less English grammar and more time writing.

Okay, I guess we'll go with it. It does sound nice to not have to do a lesson almost every single day, and I do like the thought of taking concepts more slowly. R&S really builds on itself nicely from year to year, so I can see how there wouldn't be anything in 7th that wouldn't be covered in even more detail in 8th.

          Sorry, I have another question!
I see R&S 8 in the 7A package, but not in 8A (which makes sense since it would already have been purchased). However, there is no sample of the accelerated guides to look at so I just want to check that it is actually scheduled in the lesson plans of both guides. I'm a little confused since it looks like 7M and 8M are different in grammar than the accelerated levels.
          Thanks!

The standard and accelerated packages both use R&S 8: in 8th and 9th grades in standard, and in 7th and 8th grades in accelerated. They are a year off. Does that make sense?
