  • 7th moderated lesson plans and EGR

I recently purchased next year's material (thanks free shipping!) for 7th moderated. We have been using English Grammar Recitation per the lesson plans since 4th grade which means we are doing EGR 3 this year in 6M. Since EGR 4 is the next book in the series, I purchased that for next year. When I received my lesson plans, it has R&S 8 in it. I'm hoping that is just because I received old lesson plans that have not been updated with the new EGR book yet and not because you plan to drop EGR mid program! If so, do you plan to have EGR 4 plans written into the 7M plans by August? And if so, do I need to figure out when you update it and request a new copy or will you send one automatically? I did not purchase a package because I already had much of the material from a previous student including some unused student books that I had meant to use but never did so now I can use them for this student. Basically, I did not need enough books to order a whole package so I just ordered what I needed. Everything else looks great (well, except that I need to switch levels of composition because we got caught in the transition from using a grade level behind to using moderated only to find you did not moderate composition so we will forever be a level behind in composition) so I am really hoping that soon the EGR 4 will be in the 7M lesson plans.

My dad is using 7M with EGR4 this year. We got it a bit late as it wasn't completed for our start. I call back periodically to ask when I can get updated plans. As of a couple of weeks ago I was told "soon". It is coming, just not done yet.

This is on my desk to do as a winter project, so I will hopefully have it soon. It would be best if you check back in a couple of months and see if it's there. We have trouble locating all the customers that need it and don't have a good way to monitor this.

So will both 7M & 7A be changed from R&S8 to EGR4? What are the plans then for 8th grade? Will it still use R&S8 or continue with EGR?

          7M and 6A will have EGR4 plans. 7A and 8A will have R&S 8, and 8M & 9M will have R&S 8.

After using EGR 1-3, we are using Rod and Staff 6 this year with 6A and it's going just fine. This is what predated EGR 4. We chose that because when I was ready to buy our cores last fall, it was scheduled in the plans. For sanity's sake I just went with that and it's been great. Just wanted to toss this out in case anyone wanted to work from plans instead of waiting.

Thank you for this info. My 6M is using Hake Grammar and is happy with it. I was wondering what to do next year; it looks like we'll stick with Hake next year and reevaluate a switch to RS for 8M. (Incidentally, my 3A student is very happy with EG1. We are in our 2nd review unit, and I was blown away by how well he remembered everything.)

Yes! It was one of my many 'heroic' moments for back to school in January.

Re: 7th moderated lesson plans and EGR

I'm glad to hear that EGR 4 will be included in the lesson plans and I will be sure to check back at the beginning of summer. For this particular daughter, I really want to continue using EGR and not R&S or any other grammar. We had used other grammar books before EGR came out and they were not good for her. The simple structure of EGR lends itself to her actually remembering her grammar much better than the drill and kill method in most other books. I will use EGR even if the lesson plans do not change. I was just surprised to see the R&S plans in the book. Since EGR 4 was available for purchase, I just assumed it was included in 7M. I now see that the book was released before the lesson plans could be written. I have no problem doing EGR 4 myself without lesson plans. Honestly, after doing three EGR books, we have developed our own rhythm that doesn't exactly match the lesson plans anyway. We use the included lesson plans in our 6M book mainly to keep on the right chapter each week. So, it wouldn't be much of a hassle to transcribe our rhythm into the lesson plans. I would just prefer to have the actual book I am using written in the lesson plans because it is easier on my record keeping.

Is there an expected date for EGR 5? And will that be in 8M when it is available? Thanks!

                          Hello.

We haven't started on EGR 5, and I'm not sure when that will happen. We are transitioning to R&S 8 now for a final thorough grammar review, so the need for EGR 5 has waned, putting it at the bottom of our list right now! You could still memorize the rules, but they are difficult ones! I think our teachers have the students recite them together in class regularly, but they use the R&S 8 book for exercises to illustrate the rules.

                            EGR Master List of Rules

For those who may not own it, you can find a list of all the rules Tanya is referencing in the English Grammar Recitation handbook. It contains a total of 156 rules divided into five sections to accompany the student's journey through Latina Christiana then the four years in the Latin Forms series. Also, it includes style sheets for capitalization and punctuation: end marks, commas, apostrophes, quotations, colons, and hyphens. As a bonus, it's only $10.

I have to say this is disconcerting. This is marketed as a five year program and now you are telling us you might not finish the 5th year? If this is the case, you really should market it as a four year program and tell the customers that it is not meant to be a complete grammar program and that they must use a different program to finish their grammar knowledge.

I LOVE EGR!!! It is a great program for my dyslexic who needs to learn in a very logical way. It is just enough written work but not overwhelming. The constant oral review is a must for her and this program makes that so easy to do. I would really like a level 5 and then a level 6 that is review/summary of everything. I really don't like the idea of needing to switch to a different program midway through and having to get used to a totally different way of doing grammar lessons. I understand the desire to use R&S 8 AFTER EGR 5 but not in place of. I feel a bit like I have been duped into buying a program that is not what it was sold as.
