I have bird obsessed kids. I admit it. G and D saw the MP Bird set and want to use it this year. Is this doable for their ages? Anyone who has used the study please share your experiences. {Save me from Apologia Zoo 1 again! Please! I beg you! }
Enigma,
I have it coming for this fall as part of the fifth grade package for my just-turned-10 son. I think it's right on age-wise for your boys. I think it's designed to be a half-year study? I haven't seen the Lesson Plan, but I know History of Medicine is science for fifth grade as well.

My oldest was 9 this last year, and was very into birds, so we switched the order of birds and insects, and she did just fine. As Pick and Grin said, it is only scheduled for about half a year (13 weeks) in the 5th grade plans. I think you could draw it out longer, by giving more time to learn the birds and calls as well as additional observation time.

I love the lapbooking style of the Apologia Zoology sets, but can't deal with the young earth basis.
I haven't looked at MPs bird study. Now you've got me curious.

I found another one in the last two Light Units of Christian Light Education 200 level Sunrise Science set. I'm thinking it would be too babyish for my guys, though.
My kiddos are bird fanatics too! We did use Apologia's FLying Creatures as our science this past year, and by far that was our (really only) favorite part! To continue our bird watching interests, I got each of my bigs this:
Very cheap and fun. Not too much "work", more of just identification and a space to jot down few observations per bird. We brought this on our nature walks, or just sat at our back door and watched. My 7 yo just pulled it back out last week and has set herself the goal to find them all again. Every now and then, I would encourage them to sketch or paint to sneak some art in too.
Just an idea outside an actual curriculum

Each week I save an image of the birds. I created a separate album for those photos (on my iPad) that I use to quiz him on weekly. You could also print the pic (I just hate to buy ink!).
We use the stickers from the coloring book. We cut index cards in half, put the sticker on one side and the name on the other.

For those of you who are farther along in the bird studies book, how are you testing bird songs? Are you playing the song from the CD for your child to identify, or are you reading the bird call as it is listed in the book?
