    Need Grammar help

Help! I have no previous Latin experience, and am trying to keep ahead of my fifth/seventh grade children. We are on lesson 18 in Latina Christiana I. (I know we're behind, but we just found classical Christian education this year!) I love it!! BUT, once in awhile we have a question, and don't I want to assume or teach the wrong information. Here's a typical example:
We've learned that Subject- verb- Predicate noun will not always match, as in "Maria est discipulus." We can deal with that (Teaching Shurley Grammar along with Latin sure helps!) However, what about "Mary is a good student?" I'm assuming that since good modifies student, we should say bonus discipulus, but one of the students thought it should match Maria. I don't want to give the wrong answer. Can somebody straighten us out? Thanks!
