    Traditional Spelling Question

Please forgive my absentmindedness: I cannot remember if the Supplemental Workbooks are a nice extra or essential for mastery. M does not need extra practice in anything, so I am inclined to skip these. Thoughts?

Adding to my own thread- I am so happy y'all continued to show both manuscript and cursive forms of the spelling words in TS 4. That is a huge help for many of our kiddos who struggle to see the individual letters once they are joined up. Please do the same in TS 5 and 6!

We do a lot of spelling games and oral review, so I don't use the book that just has words and lines until my kiddos are older. If it's TS II, I loved those supplemental sheets.

The Supplemental book has some of the typical exercises you think of with spelling books like fill in the blank, find the words with certain spelling patterns in sentences and then sort them by spelling pattern, unscramble the sentence, circle the right word for the situation, and things like that. I particularly like the sorting exercises. I gave them to my daughter as part of her independent morning work. We did the regular spelling book together, but she did the Supplemental book on her own. My daughter needed the practice though. It makes the spelling lists have 6 sets of exercises instead of just the 4 in the text. Maybe not necessary, but helpful. We did not use the practice sheets where they just copy the words though.

M will be doing TS 1. I should have said that first.

I would say the supplemental book is not essential for mastery if your child does not need extra practice or if he is a natural speller. We've done TS 1 and 2 without using the supplemental books with no problem. We just do the main TS book and that's it.

I went ahead and bought everything. I plan for us to tackle each list at a slower pace anyway since M's handwriting ability has just begun to be "there". Having more bits and bobs for him to practice with will be a plus. Today, I had him use the Practice Book column 1 spot to write the words in ABC order. I haven't figured out what to do with column 2 yet. Anyway, just thought I would update in case anyone was DYING to know what I decided. 😆

Thanks for the update, inquiring minds wanted to know! The CGs have the students write out the words four times in the practice book by squeezing in two words per column, twice in pencil and twice with colored pencils. We also started writing the words in cursive at some point in TSII. We try to mix it up a but to keep it interesting, but I agree with your assessment, it is very good practice and has been helpful so far for us. We'll see what TSIV has in store.

Cursive for column 2! M likes writing in cursive! He's been tracing my cursive models in STT quite happily. Thanks, Beorn!
