    Geo II Purpose

    Hello!

My daughter and I were going over her work and we were wondering why she only needs to know "some" of the capitals for the countries? I have a very rigid thinker and she doesn't understand why in Geo 1 she had to learn them all and now she doesn't? (I almost laughed out loud that she was complaining about doing LESS work, fyi). I tried to explain to her that there are just a lot more countries in this year and they must have picked a few countries they thought students should know. The main purpose of the program is simply to know where the country is on the map. If you have any additional information I can provide to her, I would be much appreciated! .

Hi howiecram, we decided not to cover every country and capital for the reason you stated. We didn't want to overwhelm students. Where possible, we tried to choose the countries that a student would need to know for his/her other classical/historical studies for the year.

Additionally, we also expect them to learn these "skipped" countries and capitals in Geo III, so they will eventually get to them.

This year I ask my children (4th and 6th grade) to work towards mastery of the countries and capitals in the workbook using the flashcards. Then they laugh (my overachiever 4th grader) and feel relief (my avoids-her-flashcards 6th grader) when we do the review lesson before tests and they find out all that they don’t actually need to know!
