Yeah, without the Latin you will need grammar instruction, probably more so than just the EGR program because that was intended to go with Latin. But having the Core Skills grade level workbooks might help round it out a bit more and make it ad complete as you need. I *think* it would be a fine thing to try and see how it goes. (Keep us posted!)
And then...writing! Classical Composition would fall into the LA category, so make sure to include that too!

Sarah,
I appreciate your kind words and prayers! Thank you so very much. It is indeed an immense undertaking to switch from a classical education to online-based education. My 8th grader will be doing all the core subjects online, so we will be using MP materials as read alouds. On the other hand, my 5th grader will be doing everything online as well, with the exception of math and language arts, so I do need to get the 5th grade student guides for the language arts module from MP, but since we are not longer doing Latin, I guess I still need to get additional components. I'll miss our regular MP studies for sure.Last edited by MG_; 08-07-2020, 12:15 PM.Leave a comment:

MG,
Wow. This sounds like a really big change...and one that you may not be that happy about. If things are challenging right now, I am sorry to hear that and I will pray that things improve.
As to your question, it is hard to tell if what you want to add will be too much without know much about what they will be doing outside of the MP materials. But I will say that yes, every single thing that MP has in its curriculum could be classified as simply a great book to read. So keeping your home library well-stocked with all the books that they would have read is an excellent way to still give them as much as you can manage while using a different day-to-day curriculum. And then once you guys get started, pay attention to areas that may not be being addressed very well (my first guess off the top of my head would be writing). Since this sounds like it is a multi-person decision, maybe you can have a "right of recall" to reopen the terms of the new agreement and add in materials to help with those weak areas. (I am thinking literature guides or classical studies guides would be super for this).
I hope as time goes by this year you will be able to find a happy medium. Hugs, friend!

Adjusting our MP studies (8th & 5th grade accelerated)
After a lot of deliberation (and compromise), we have decided to do mostly online school (not MP) for the rest of our home-based learning journey. However, I want to continue to enrich their education by adding the most important elements of the MP curriculum into their online studies so my plan is to use most 8th/5th grade materials (no Latin) as 'read-alouds' (discussions and maybe a few writing exercises) throughout the year. Do you think this is still feasible? or is it too much? I do need to get additional Language Art materials for my 5th grader (any recommendations?) since we are completely removing Latin. Thanks!
