2019: What's your school year motto?

Lots of planning going on 'round here over the last several weeks, and because of it, I have been soooooo slow at getting through the most recent Classical Teacher. But I finally read the cover article today, "Gravitas" by Cheryl Lowe. I love, love, love to read her words and imagine her speaking them from a podium. So, in light of recent topics of conversation here on the Forum, and the needs of our family for the coming year, I decided that one of these days I will run out to Hobby Lobby and get some vinyl lettering to hang a new motto on our study wall for this year. Can you guess what I will use?

    Yep: Gravitas.

Now only hoping I can find a nice italic font to put it in!

How about you? What will your motto be for the new school year?

    AMDG,
    Sarah

I still need to read that article! We just started Latina Christiana and I made a fun cover for my daughter’s Latin binder with the heading of Ora et Labora. A bit overused perhaps but apt nonetheless!

Our family motto is always: We do hard things!

I thought it would be fun to come up with a Latin motto as a family, too. I thought about getting it put on a t-shirt we can all wear. My daughter wants to translate it into Latin, but we're just starting LC in 2 weeks. Haha. It would be: Follow God. Obey (your) parents. Serve man.

St. Benedict is our family and homeschool patron (our family name). I think we will end up using "Cruz Sacra Sit Mihi Lux", from the St. Benedict medal. "The Holy Cross Be My Light". Very simple, yet all inclusive. My children also want shirts! We have decided on using the medal. Front on the front of the shirt, back on the back. Now to figure out how to make that happen..

What a great idea! This, too, is often used, but for this upcoming year, I have made the note "Festina Lente"/"Make Haste Slowly" on many of my planning notes.

The runner up is "Multum non Multa"/"Much not many" since this is the first year our twins are "officially" part of our curriculum and I want us to read "all the books."

My oldest got a St. Benedict Medal shirt at Franciscan University this summer. Their bookstore doesn't have it online, but they're out there!

Middle son said something today that shocked me. We had a long Patton style talk this morning about why school is hard. At the end, I asked them all, what is it that "you" want?

                "I want to be more".

I've got our motto for the year.

I think I'm permanently stuck on Festina Lentē, but everything everyone shared above is so good. (I am secretly taking ALL the mottos. Please don't tell anyone.)

Wow, Melissa, "I want to be more." I love that. Simple and profound at the same time!

Even though I'm not a Marine, I love "Semper Fidelis" - Always Faithful. I guess because it ties in to our family's motto of "Let your yes be yes and your no be no." (But I don't want that to be our school motto necessarily.)

Enbateau, I also really love the "Do Hard Things".....my son is hopefully going to finish reading that book this summer by the Harris brothers.

Thanks, Sarah, for starting this thread!

                        Good afternoon enbateau,

While your daughter may not yet be ready to translate your family motto into Latin, perhaps she'd find it inspiring to see the Latin

Sequere Deum. Oboedi parentibus. Servi homini.
Follow God. Obey (your) parents. Serve man.

                        HTH!
