Jane Eyre and Latin for the Win!

Often, I see post how classical education is benefitting our children. This one is a little different, this post is about how I have benefitted.

I had a unique opportunity this last weekend, I was a delegate for Mrs. Kentucky America. I didn't bring home the title, but I did win an award in Interview! The Interview portion consisted of a panel of 5 judges sitting at a long table while I stood and answered questions for 5 minutes. I was not given a list of potential questions and did not know anything about the judges until I entered the room at my appointed time. Several of the first questions I received were about homeschooling and Latin was quickly brought into the conversation. One of the most difficult questions I received was "Tell me about a book you've read recently that reflects your personality." I was able to relate Jane Eyre to myself quite eloquently, if I do say so myself! I found out later that the judge who asked this question had been an English professor for many years. It's quite possible that this particular question won Interview for me. Two of the other judges found me to discuss Latin and HLS at dinner that evening.

My main point is to encourage you to continue in the classical education journey. I was not classically educated. I am only in my fourth year and have personally gained so much! I'm not reading every book that my children read, I have never filled out a guide of my own, I don't drill flashcards, and I'm not investing the time studying that they are. I am picking up bits and pieces along the way. Within the last couple years, I started reading good books for pleasure and clearly it's paying off. Whether or not we realize it, by teaching our children classically we are sowing seeds into our own lives. I'm beginning to the taste the fruit and it is sweet!<3

Courtney! Congratulations on winning the interview portion!

I think we tend to assume that only children need to have their tastes trained; however, I have found that I've become more introspective (I'll wait while you stop laughing) and my thoughts are more attuned to Good Things because of the lessons I've been trying to teach my kids.

I'm sorry you didn't win the title (which, in my completely objective and in no-way-colored-by-our-friendship opinion, you should have won) but I think what you possess in grace and intellect likely outshines the other contestants by a factor of a thousand. Again, being totally objective.

        Courtney,

I consider this a win! Congratulations! The interview is the hardest part of these contests. Is there a way we can see it? Is it taped?

          Courtney!
Thank you so much for updating us on the pageant results! I still think that was such an awesome thing for you to do! And to hear your reflections on it was great. And now you will have plenty of time for “other things”! Yay!

They do not record interview. The rest of the pageant is recorded, but I’m not sure I want to watch. I’ve never watched my breakout from last summer.

It is so great to have friends like you all cheering me on from far and near! <3
