    First Grade Readiness?

Is there a first grade readiness list somewhere? Didn't see one on the First Grade Curriculum pages.
    Thanks!

There isn't one currently, but we might be able to make one. Our primary specialist, Michelle, is out of the office visiting a school, so it may be a bit. Until then, the short answer to your question is: Mastery of the reading, writing, and arithmetic skills covered in our Kindergarten Curriculum. I know you want more detail than that, though!

      Re: First Grade Readiness?

Haha! You are exactly right: I want more detail! It is helpful as families come to MP from other things in homeschooling to know exactly where a student should begin. It's an individual placement question when it only concerns a homeschool, but when a cottage school in involved you have to have a more complete picture of the situation. You basically have to know, is it K, is it 1st, is it 2nd? Lists are so helpful to those who are coming from outside to MP!

Thank you and we'll hang tight for a list at some point.

Absolutely! Also, if this question is really on behalf of HLN, contact Ryan Weston ([email protected]). He can help you craft placement tests for your school.

          Re: First Grade Readiness?

I posted it here because it does come up as it relates to cottage school, but I hear these questions outside that context as well. For us, the MP readiness is the same as HLN readiness because HLN uses the entire curriculum at the primary level. Where they are with MP is where they are with us!

          Thanks!

I know you all offer "al la carte" 3rd and up. What do you do with say, an 8 year old, who really needs MP1? Do you just say "this is where they place" - even though they might be in a class of 6/7 year olds? Do people care? Just totally curious!

We are all on journeys, and they may have started differently. Do you find you have mixed aged classes then, or if someone has an 8 year old who needs MP1, do they just decide not to participate? (I'm sure it varies, again, just curious). '

*still thinking about cottage schools near us, but not this year.* Due to my kiddos "issues" it seems that 3rd and up cottage would probably be best, but curious if people have their "older" kids in with the younger ones?

My boys were in the Cottage School here in Louisville this year, and while they were the oldest in their class, I don't feel like it was an issue. They turned 10 in May. I chose to put them in MP2, as opposed to the 3rd grade classes. They might have been able to handle the 3rd grade classes, but I didn't want the year to be a complete grind. Even though they were in with younger students, it really helped their confidence level. They're used to the setup of the classroom now, and we look forward to starting again in the fall.

Dianna, as you know we're in a similar situation...what will the boys be doing at Cottage School this coming year?

In that case, please encourage them to call us! We love to talk with each individual family so that we can customize subjects to their situation. We have found that a conversation is the best readiness assessment

                    Re: First Grade Readiness?

Yes, I appreciate the forum and phone call options for that help!

                    Christine,
The placement is done more a la carte by class as they get older, yes. Our K-2 is one contained classroom (thus core) per grade. The longer students have been with MP the more likely they are to be entirely in one grade (core package). We do have age variance but that shows up most often in cumulative classes like Composition or Latin or math for older students. We've not yet had anyone want to be in the cottage school who's drastically above the age range for any of these classes. For those reasons, we don't have a set age policy but take it family by family because every child is different.

When you step into a cottage school (or co-op/tutorial) environment you are necessarily jettisoning some of the homeschool freedom of working at your own pace and starting wherever appropriate and ending wherever appropriate for the year. We start classes and end them. We do one lesson per week. We don't take off weeks for your family's vacation, etc. It's a big change from the freedom of doing it all on your own time. This is actually one of the things we're going to discuss in the Hybrid Homeschooling session at Sodalitas!

I've had to really change the way I think about our breaks around here. I don't get to run off to visit friends in another state anytime I want without consequences for me and my students. <<sigh>>
