  • Pre-conference tracks

It looks like Sodalitas should work out this year so I need to get registered. My biggest question now is which pre-conference track I should register for. I did second form Latin two years ago as I was finishing up first form myself, but I have only made it to lesson 15 in the two years since Sodalitas. I did really well until I hit prepositions and then I stalled out for a long while. My oldest son will be doing the second half of Henle 1 on his own this coming year. The next guy is starting first form.

The ones I am considering are
    Latin class - which one?
Classical composition - what is the format? I will have one in MPOA and one starting fable (hopefully at a cottage school if that materializes)
Novare - does anyone know what will be covered? An overview of the books or how to teach? If I do this I will probably head home after lunch.

    Thanks for the help!

    Good morning,

I'm sure some former attendees will chime in soon with their recommendations. Until then, I can answer your questions about the content of some of the tracks:

CC: This track will provide an overview of the entire program so parents/teachers will know where they've come from and where they're coming. Several model lessons will be included.

Novare: The focus will be on the philosophy behind Novare's approach to science.

      Dorinda,
What can you knock out during the two days of SG? In other words, your Wednesday should probably be an icing on the cake type of class. All day Latin would be a great choice if you are ready to dig back in yourself. You could redo Second Form. Classical Composition is very valuable if you want a 10,000 feet view of the entire program, what you are doing now, and how that prepares you for what's ahead. I took this last year and it was very helpful. Especially around Ref/Con you really start to see the work in Latin and Logic as important to cultivating what they need to excel in the upper levels of CC. Usually the most time is spent of Ref/Con levels and down. Last year (on Friday), Mrs. Johnson did give overview level info on the remaining topics above Ref/Con. She surveyed those of us in the room to see how much time she needed to spend on each level. No one in my particular class was teaching above Ref/Con if I remember correctly. Novare--do you think you'd enjoy a solid, science-morning as a cap to your two days of general training? If you stay all day Wednesday will you go home that night, or wait until Thursday morning? If you stay all day/night you might be able to stay and hear Tracy Lee Simmons open up the Teacher Training!

Not to derail this thread from Dorinda's question, but this jumped out at me.
Is Logic required to work in Ref/Con? Meaning, if our student has not had Logic, are they going to be sunk?

          Dianna,

My daughter took what was called MSCOMP2 at the time in 7th grade through MPOA. They reviewed fable & narrative and covered Cheria/Maxim & ref/con that year. She did not take logic until this year in 9th grade concurrent with completing the CC sequence. (Only her final paper left -yeah!) Would taking logic earlier have helped? Probably. Has she done well and learned a lot anyway? Most certainly!

No, Dianna, she will be fine. There are certain exercises during the two-week span of the lessons that offer the suggestion, “If your students has taken logic, have them add...X” which be to practice some of what they learned in logic. Not necessary in order to complete the course though.

Thanks, Dorinda. I didn't mean to jump in your thread. That jumped out at me, and I panicked. Rachel has been through Fable, Narrative, and just finished C/M this week. She's totally not ready for Logic from a maturity level standpoint.

                  Re: Pre-conference tracks

Dianna! Eek! So sorry I sent you into panic mode. Mea culpa! For the older student who's overlapping with logic, yes, there is a great synergy. For the younger student it can be a foretaste of the idea that "all that random work mom is assigning" is going to converge in the future. They will have a chance to bring in logic later as they study it, and they will know in advance that it can be useful in writing and persuasion.
