    Second Form, Lesson 14

    Worksheet 6, Translation sentence #5:

    Why is it not "hostes turpes"? (3rd decl. i-stem m/f with "to" taking acc. case) Where have we gone wrong?

    The reason it is "hostibus turpibus" is because it is in the dative since "to shameful enemies" is the indirect object. When translating from English to Latin, one has to be very careful about "to" phrases--it is easy to confuse an indirect object with motion towards expressed by "ad + object in the accusative".
