    EGR English Verb Tenses

Hi, I'm wondering why EGR Grammar Question #48 states that there are six English verb tenses? I have learned and taught when teaching ESL that there are 12 English verb tenses

    1. Present
    2. Present continuous (progressive)
    3. Present perfect
    4. Present perfect continuous
    5. Past
    6. Past Continuous
    7. Past Perfect
    8. Past Perfect Continuous
    9. Future
    10. Future continuous
    11. Future Perfect
    12. Future Perfect Continous

Why does MP not teach that the progressive forms are also tenses? I'm sorry if this information is somewhere already. I couldn't find it mentioned when searching the forum. Thank you!

    Good afternoon,

We treat the progressive (continuous) and emphatic forms as aspects, not tenses. To simplify somewhat, aspect describes what kind of an action occurs (e.g., is it ongoing?, completed?, repeated?), while tense describes when an action occurs (e.g., in the past? in the past before another past event? in the present?). See EGR #49-52.

    HTH!
