    Standardized Testing Questions

Could you provide some advice on standardized testing for jr high/ high school? Do HLS 7th graders take the SAT or ACT? Thoughts on whether this is a good idea? My sons take the ITBS every year, so they are familiar with standardized testing. Also, what are your thoughts on ACT vs. SAT for high school? It looks like from the HLS website your students take both. Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

At HLS our K-8th only use the ITBS for standardized testing. We only do the core battery (not science or social studies). It sounds like you have plenty of time before you have to start worrying about the SAT and ACT!

In 10th grade we have our students do the PSAT which they then retake in 11th grade. We highly encourage them to take the SAT or ACT by the end of 11th grade but that is up to them (some even start taking it in 10th grade). We leave the choice of which one they take up to them because it will largely depend on the college institution they are looking at. If they are unsure which to take, we suggest the SAT since most schools with better reputations require it.

The ACT used to be required in Kentucky but it is not anymore. I would suggest looking up your state and local college requirements and go from there.
