  • Fourth Form Latin TG, Lesson IV

I have the Teacher Key, First Edition. This may have been fixed in future guides, but if not....

In Lesson IV, Worksheet 4, "Infinitives and Fourth Form New Vocabulary", #7, the English to be translated is "They prepared to answer the end of the letter." Letter is translated as litterarum. I believe this should be epistulae (?)

    Hello,

Epistulae does indeed mean of the letter, but so does litterarum. In Lesson 4, I believe, you are learning plural nouns - that is, nouns that can translate differently when plural in number - one of which is littera. On its own, littera means letter as in a letter of the alphabet; in the plural, litterae can mean either letters (of the alphabet) OR a letter of the sending-receiving sort. Hence, the genitive plural litterarum.

Thank you for the clarification - this is very helpful! I'll pass it along to my student.
