How many of you have your high school student take the CLT? I am considering having my 10th grader take it this fall. Is there a code to cover the fee (or at least discount it)?

I had mine take the CLT10 as a 9th grader and will have her take the CLT this spring. Colleges frequently cover the cost of the CLT with an application (see https://www.cltexam.com/tests/clt/), however, this may be premature for a 10th grader. HSLDA members receive 25% off the exam fee -- see https://hslda.org/post/classic-learning-test

This spring Benedictine had a test day where they covered registration if you signed up through them. The I formation came in an email from CLT so sign up for info and they will send out any discount codes like that.

We've taken the CLT8, the CLT10 at the end of 9th and again at the end of 10th grade, and the CLT. The CLT can be free if you fill out not a full application but an "information sheet" with whatever school happens to be sponsoring a specific date. We've never done that, we've always used a 50% coupon from MA, it usually comes inside one of the parent newsletters.

For a 10th grader, I think the CLT10 is more important than the CLT because of the potential to win one of the $2,500 scholarships. The CLT10 wants to be just like the PSAT, so that would be their equivalent of the National Merit Scholarship. Nothing wrong with taking the full CLT and getting used to it, but for that purpose there are also the free trials on the website and the study guide.

I didn’t even know there was a CLT10. Tell me more about where I can find info on this scholarship. Is the scholarship only for those who take the text in 10th grade? Also, do students “study” for the CLT or the CLT10? Thanks!

Check out the CLT website for info. It is only for those who take the CLT 10 in 10th grade (similar to the PSAT taken in 11th for National Merit). My son took it last minute this April and we just received word that he was in the top 50 and won a $2,500 scholarship!!!! He only took a practice test and that was all the study he did. He is ahead in math so that probably helped.

Congratulations, Debbie! That's wonderful! I scrolled the post of winners today and noticed 29+ of the 50 winners were homeschooled.

OP: We take the CLT10, then PSAT, then laser-focus on the ACT for actual applications. The CLT10 can give you an early "validating score" if your homeschooled student is starting to look for colleges--Handy in talking to admissions people.

Congratulations, Debbie - are you sure he doesn't want to become a Tolkien scholar now that he has this incentive too?
pickandgrin makes a good point: Jen asked about the CLT exams, but we, too, take the PSAT in the fall of 11th grade and then the SAT. Even my daughter, whose colleges of choice accept the CLT, took both those tests as well, but she decided to share the score only for the CLT because it was the one that really stood out and will help the most with scholarships. So what you take besides the various CLTs (and what you share) is up to you and depends on what schools your family is considering: we have plenty of friends who only take the CLT and it's totally fine. I still think for a 10th grader CLT10 and PSAT should be the main focus.

Thank you for all your feedback. I had planned for him to take the PSAT next year and then the SAT or ACT. With the CLT being newer, I wasn't sure what was the best way to incorporate it. If scholarships are connected to the CLT10, then I want to make sure he takes it this year. We haven't any ideas about schools yet. I have my preference, haha!, but he's unsure. If he takes the tests, we can send scores to the various schools when the time comes.

Jen, just to be clear: the only scholarship connected to the CLT10 is the $2,500 given to the 50 best scores each year, and it can only used with one of the partner colleges. It's also worth exploring how these colleges connect CLT scores (not CLT10 ones) to merit scholarships, for instance, here's a helpful table from Benedictine College. So your son can take the CLT and the SAT/ACT and have a choice of which score to send. Many schools also super-score, meaning that if you share more than one score for the same test, they'll put together the best individual section scores even if they happened on different test taking dates (the CLT has 3 sections, the SAT 2, and the ACT 4, if I remember correctly).
I don't know how many schools may do this, but one of those my daughter is interested in will even give you an automatic $1,000/year tuition discount simply for sharing a CLT score.

I think I’m missing a joke. What do you mean by Tolkien scholar? Because he loves Tolkien and is having a blast in Mr. Cutrer’s Senior lit seminar on Tolkien. Is there a Tolkien scholarship I should be looking into?????
