    This never gets old

Okay, so I love hearing these stories from folks, and we had it happen again today....

We have been suffering through another grueling stomach bug, so we are calling it a spring break of sorts. With the weather this week, it even feels that way.

So I ransacked my bin of books grandparents had salvaged in their antiquing trips, and brought up a couple of stacks to set out for anyone with the energy to turn an actual page.

I found Ivanhoe, thinking my son may gravitate toward it given his Middle Ages studies right now, but wondered if it would be too hard so I just stuck it in the stack.

Tonight, my eighth grader brought it to me to point out, with a gleam in her eye, the front matter of a chapter was the description of The Monk from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, which she is currently studying. She was absolutely delighted, saying sweetly, "I read that!" (Huge grin)

    Ahhhh, this never gets old!

Smiling! My 3rd grader was trying to work though her Charlotte's Web Vocabulary today. The word was sociable. I asked a few questions and her answers indicated she really did not have any clue what the word might meant. About to give up, I asked her if she could identify any Latin root in her word. Within a few seconds she answered, "Socius and that means ally...hmm..an ally is your friend....maybe friendly?" Big high fives from Mom and a great big smile from her for using Latin to determine the meaning of her word!! Another homerun for Latin study!

Yes, thanks for sharing, Sarah. I got to have one of those moments yesterday.

Background: this is my son's first year homeschooling. Prior to beginning, I asked him what history he was interested in studying, and he said that he didn't want Christopher Columbus, George Washington, or slavery. So, we've done Rome and Middle Ages this year (one per semester, roughly two days per week instead of one as is the usual pace).

I sent him to read about Rollo in the Middle Ages text. He was completely blown away by the fact that Vikings came to North Anerica first. He wouldn't quit talking about it. I could tell he felt completely blown away and short changed all those years learning about Columbus in school. So, that led to a bunny trail, of course, which I indulged.

We are having a perfect year with history with MP. He started the year needing me to read Famous Men of Rome aloud, then we transitioned to swapping paragraphs, and now he is off alone reading it by himself. This is exactly what I wanted to happen, and I couldn't be happier.

              Had a moment

We were with a fairly large group of friends and had just finished a prayer meeting, had brought the kids back in with all the adults when a Dr. friend comes up to me and was amazed that when he asked my 5 yo dd about school she told him she learned a poem, reciting "Stopping by Woods On a Snowy Evening" He told her that was his favorite poem and did she know who wrote it? She promptly replied "Robert Frost". All without me there! Serious pride moment . Thanks MP for making these impressive moments relatively effortless. Slow and steady and they learn so much, love it!

Good stuff! It really never gets old! My two year old twin's current favorite thing to sing is Dona Nobis Pacem. It took the place of Row Row Your Boat. Love it

It is quite hilarious because they get super serious. My big two tried for a while to get one to sing the female and the other the male parts. Ha!

Man, do we need to get back to school! My three year old is stuck on "Jake and the Never Land Pirates" theme song from when all my littles were sick for two weeks....ugh! Not as edifying, (but still cute!) Trying to enjoy our break, but ready to get back to the good stuff too!

Just had to add to this thread:
Today we started a month long break from school because we have an international move coming up in 2 weeks and I (obviously) need to get to packing/ selling, etc. So this morning, my 4th grader comes to me, "Mom, can't I please just do one subject each day? Can't I at least do Heidi (literature)?" I love it!

My husband thinks I'm crazy because I actually said no. But other than our flashcards and memory work, we aren't going to be doing any subjects until we are settled into our new home. To be perfectly honest, its partly because I don't want to mess with our nice lesson plans and get off-skelter with the days . Yes, I am somewhat a control freak.

Control freak? Let's just put some spin on it and say, "organized and driven," or perhaps, "productively disciplined." I would not know anything about that though ....(!)

We had another one today....just can't help sharing. My oldest, again, was sitting next to me in the van and saw a corvette pull up next to us, which startled everyone because they are a rare sight for us. She was tickled to point out to me that in her online academy science class they had determined their force/mass/acceleration problem using a corvette. She pointed out how often she sees things from school come up in real life....like the tv show, "When Calls the Heart" using "Hope is the Thing With Feathers" in one of its episodes. I think it proves we are working to preserve our shared culture, as Martin Cothran writes about in the magalog this month.
